About The Event

A Primal Voice approach to BODY & BREATH

A perfect introductory or refresher course for singers, singing teachers, vocal coaches, choir directors, speech therapists, and physiotherapists/osteopaths who work with performers, who want lots of practical takeaway tools to add to their existing practice.

This intensely practical course will take you through a series of exercises that you can use for yourself, your students, and/or your patients exploring the dynamic and intrinsically linked relationship between body and breath.

Topics covered include:

  • Stretch and release of head/neck/vocal tract tension. Essential maintenance between vocal massages/manual therapy.
  • Long-term and short-term exercises for head/neck, shoulders, pelvis, knees and feet.
  • Breath work inspired (pun-intended) by Accent Method, but adapted for performers in contemporary styles including pop/rock/musical theatre, etc.
  • Practical masterclass

My INTRO TO PRIMAL VOICE course is running the day after this. Why not book both and make it a whole weekend of training? Details for that course can be found here.

Your Presenter

Dane Chalfin is a Vocal Rehabilitation Coach and Singing Teacher working in both NHS and private practice in London, Manchester and online. Clients include major recording artists, West End productions of Wind in the Willows, Rock of Ages, Sunny Afternoon, Tell Me On a Sunday, and Motown; and national tours of Jesus Christ Superstar, Wicked, The Producers, Shout!, and many others. TV work includes The Voice, The One Show, and The Eurovision Song Contest. His private practice consists of around 80% vocal rehabilitation for performers with voice trouble and 20% high-profile performers who train regularly to stay in peak performance condition. Dane routinely works with pop/rock/theatre singers, radio/tv broadcasters, presenters, transgender performers, and other vocal coaches/singing teachers.

His ongoing research (2006-present) with University Hospital South Manchester into the endoscopic assessment of disordered singers and the laryngopharyngeal gestures of singing and primal sounds now has over 450 subjects and may be the largest study into the singing voice to date. He also contributed to the development of the Endoscopic Protocol for the Assessment of Singers in the Voice Clinic (Jones, Chalfin, Garrett 2006-17), which is widely used in voice clinics to help assess singers with voice trouble.

Dane is a past president (2015-16) and director of the British Voice Association. He has been a vocal advisor to the Medical Committee of the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM 2017-19) where he pioneered the creation of competencies for Vocal Rehabilitation Coaches working in multidisciplinary voice clinics in the UK. Dane has previously held the Associate Professorship of Vocal Coaching and Rehabilitation at Leeds College of Music, where he was also Principal Lecturer of Artistry and Performance (2007-17). Other academic posts include teaching fellow in Pop Voice at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (2003-6), Senior Lecturer in Pop Voice at the Royal Northern College of Music (2008-10), and Lecturer in Voice at University of Salford (2001-03).

Publications include TC-Helicon’s Ultimate Guide to Singing (2016), and Bloomsbury’s The Singer-Songwriter Handbook (2017) and the 2nd edition of Compton Publishing's seminal The Voice Clinic Handbook (2018).

Dane's Primal Voice model is evidence-based without being overly scientific in its delivery and focuses on the practical holistic nature of the relationship between brain, body, breath, interpretation, voice and performance.
